Somatic Experiencing
Somatic Experiencing is a powerful therapy that helps you to heal from chronic anxiety, unresolved trauma, and PTSD by restoring your nervous system back to a state of healthy balance.
Somatic Experiencing was developed by Dr Peter Levine on his lifelong mission to help people heal from chronic stress and unresolved trauma. Dr Levine started with the premise that trauma is a fact of life (look at the African Serengeti), and therefore animals and humans must be evolutionarily designed to heal from traumatic events. He then re-discovered exactly how we naturally heal from traumatic stress.
What has made modern day humans susceptible to chronic anxiety and unresolved trauma is that we have become disconnected from and over-controlling of our bodies and emotions during a time filled with unprecedented stresses and challenges. Whereas our ancestors would have experienced only a brief period of fight, flight or freeze in order to cope with a life threatening event, modern day humans are especially vulnerable to having their nervous systems get stuck in a chronic anxiety and freeze response.
Somatic Experiencing is an organic process that helps a person come out of frozen disempowerment and trauma. We start by building safety and connection. Then we find exercises that help to relax your nervous system. We work on developing your connection to your body, sensations, and range of emotions. We work on empowering you through practical exercises that help restore healthy boundaries and assertiveness. And as we build these foundations, we can go back and help you digest the traumatic events in a safe way.
Together we can reverse the tides within and restore you to a natural balanced state of nervous system health.
